What to expect?

Classes are made up of a maximum of 8 students and take place in the beautiful setting of our family farm nestled on the edge of Sheepleas nature reserve and at the foot of  The Surrey Hills, an area of outstanding natural beauty.

This is aimed at being a creative day making spoons at a relaxed pace, being out in nature. The workspace is undercover in a former open sided farm building, or weather dependant can be around the open fire in a small adjacent copse. Lunch is often cooked on the same fire and served there.

Most students will be first time carvers, some may be returning to further practice their skills and gain more experience.

Find out more about Adrian and our team of experienced teachers that you can read more about in the Team section.

We will guide you through the steps of making a wooden spoon of your very own. During the day you will explore:

  • Introduction, safety and where everything is…

  • Axe and general knife use and more safety

  • Spoon design choices

  • Wood selection

  • How to put a crank in

  • How to axe out a blank

  • Knife work including carving a bowl

You are guided through the whole process and advice is on hand to help you.

This is an exercise in learning a new craft, being creative and slowing down to appreciate the art of carving.

“I'd highly recommend the one-day spoon carving day - such as enjoyable, creative, mindful day in a beautiful and peaceful setting. Adrian was an excellent teacher, and Sarah made a delicious lunch that we had round the camp fire. A great day, and I was delighted to come away with an actual spoon I'd made out of a block of wood!” Cyra, farnham, Dec 21
